Alright, everybody. This is the first newsletter posting. I’m going to try to do this if not weekly then at least bi-weekly for a while. Like it says elsewhere around here, I try to keep UrbaneTurtle.com proper pretty isolated as a portfolio hosting place so some of my less formal thoughts don’t belong there, but Twitter is also a garbage fire so that seems like a poor place to put up any real thoughts. So I’m trying this new form of posting out.
Slightly Exaggerated Issue 2 Kickstarter!
I wrote about issue 1 of the self-published comic Slightly Exaggerated at the end of January. You can read what I thought about it and why I liked it so much here.
Well the creators, Pius Bak and Curtis Clow are back and getting to work on getting issue 2 out, and I really want to read it after the way issue 1 ends, so go support the book! The art on this thing is P H E N O M E N A L.
Thinking a lot about Nightwing
Against my better judgement I am very excited about the new Nightwing run by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo… Dick Grayson’s a character I love but whose solo book has never really worked. I think Tom Taylor’s track record as a guy who is able to draw from diverse continuity scraps and make something fresh and fun will benefit the character a lot, so I think we are maybe in for the best run since Tomasi left after Dick took over as Batman. (Which, unfortunately, is not saying much.)
Two additional things are leaving me hopeful. One: the cover artwork for the first 2 issues from Redondo are perfect—neon colors and smiling Grayson! And man, that new logo by Daran Robinson is fresh as heck.
If I can rush some backlog reading (I just started New Teen Titans for the first time!) I am hopefully going to put together some thoughts on Dick Grayson’s publishing history in the next week or 2 to prepare for the debut issue of Taylor and Redondo’s run. I have some pretty big blindspots that I need to fill in before then so hopefully I can cram some content in and get something good out. So expect the site to be silent for a little bit as I do my research.
Random Comic Panel of the Week
Odds and Ends
I am running out of room for new physical comics! I might have a year or 2 of collecting before I have to just throw in the towel and go all digital.

In celebration of Black History Month, I have been doing a daily drawing of a new black superhero every day in February instead of writing. It’s been fun. Follow along on Twitter:

One more thing—my essay for PanelxPanel on Jane Foster’s Thor has gone through its final revisions and is scheduled for publishing in June! Hooray!
Are We Done?
Life has been crazy busy and it’s hard to keep up with new comics, preparing for a new baby, my graphic design course, and an absurd workload at the day-job that leaves me exhausted, so I’ll leave us here for now. Keep checking back!
